Back-Up To An External Hard Drive
- By: Mark Dawes
Many computers only come with a certain amount of storage space in the system. If you save a lot of movies and download a lot of programs and music to your pc, you may be running out of storage space on your hard drive. Instead of deleting your downloads and files to generate more storage space, external hard drives are a great solution to generate additional storage space for your laptop. External hard drives are small, easy to transport, and are compatible with most computers. There is an external hard drive for every type of Mac, PC, and even older pc's. They vary in size from about one inch to two inches long and can be plugged into most USB ports.
A hard drive which is over loaded with records may slow down your computer. If the pc is slowing down, items from the laptop can be moved to the external hard drive to quicken the processing speed of the computer. Moving the extra files to the external hard drive will free up storage space on the pc, allowing you to use your pc without the delay that comes with overflowing files. When you need those files that have been moved to the external hard drive, it can simply be plugged back into the USB port.
Another big aspect about external hard drives is that they cannot crash like computers can. If you have very important library which are saved on your pc for work or school, saving them to an external hard drive can save those important files in the instance of a computer crash. Moving them in an external hard drive keeps them safe and protected, and away from the risk of losing them. Whenever they are required they can be accessed by plugging the external hard drive into the USB port of the pc.
There are various amounts of storage space available on external hard drives. Some external hard drives like the Iomega are available with 160 gb of storage space, and another version of the Simpletech is available with 1tb of storage space. External hard drives come with different amounts of storage space depending on how much additional storage space your computer needs. If the computer needs only a small amount more of storage space, an external hard drive with a small amount of storage space such as the Toshiba which holds 160 gb will hold just enough. If your computer is filled with media and needs a lot more storage space, an external hard drive with more space will hold everything that the computer does not have space for.
