The most well-known of these crossings is the Skunk, which was bred in the seventies in the USA. It is called Skunk because of its very strong smell. It has an almost as strong effect as the Sativa, however a reduced blooming phase of approximately 50 to 70 days. The clear advantage of such a hybrid is that all good characteristics are united like good Taste, nice high effect and short flowering time. Marijuana is however not legal. Some European countries have decriminalized the use of marijuana, regarding the drug as no more harmful than cigarettes and alcohol. Some argue that permitting marijuana to be used for medical purposes would lead to an increase in recreational use and pressure to legalize the drug. THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, has a biological impact that distinguishes it from legal drugs such as tobacco and alcohol. THC releases dopamine, a naturally produced chemical that stimulates a feeling of euphoria; as dopamine supplies are exhausted, people using marijuana show withdrawal symptoms. In 1999, the National Institute on Drug Abuse categorized more than two million people as dependent on marijuana based on such criteria.
