Shah Rukh Khan in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

By: Sajjad Haider

If you are thinking that we are spinning a scoop around the fact that the younger and modern Shahrukh Khan in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is playing a character which goes by the name of Raj Kapoor, then you are mistaken! Yes, SRK does go by the name Raj Kapoor in the film and is once again essaying the iconic Raj, which he made so endearing and famous after the trendsetting Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. A role which many other actors tried to enact unsuccessfully. However, we are referring to the real Raj Kapoor, the original showman of Bollywood, whose presence can be felt many a times in the Aditya Chopra directed Shahrukh Khan starrer.

Firstly the simpleton character of Shahrukh Khan (whose screen name is Surinder Sahni in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi) seems to be inspired by the simple, lovable ragamuffin/vagabond played by the legend, Raj Kapoor in his Awara/Anari days. Notice the simplicity and SRK's soft, soothing dialogue delivery style (Surinder Sahni this side ji!) which tug at the heart, much similar to Raj Kapoor's characters in his hey days. Then we have the couple logo of the R.K.Films (more like a dancing couple here) which makes an appearance in the promos and the posters of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

And last but not the least, the original showman and his family's presence is highly pronounced in the brilliant dance track, 'Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte', where King Khan pays homage to the greats of Bollywood. And topping the list is of course Raj Kapoor followed by his brother, the great dancing star, Shammi Kapoor and the number ends with his youngest son, the super actor, Rishi Kapoor.

So, with the Raj Kapoor factor embedded in its plot we are sure that Bollywood's global superstar, Shahrukh Khan will win the hearts of zillions through his effective portrayal of the winning underdog in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, when the film releases on December 12.
