Remodeling Kitchen Floors Can Be A Complicated Procedure

By: Adrian Hardy

What's the first thing someone notices in your kitchen ? Surprisingly, it's the floor. The floor is essentially the frame around the beautiful picture that is your kitchen. And like any good picture frame, the floor will attract the initial attention of the onlooker. Thus if the old linoleum or hardwood flooring is badly worn with parts of the sub-floor showing through it’s time to consider remodeling kitchen floors but it is often overlooked because it is no simple task

It is never an acceptable practice to place a new vinyl floor on top of an old one as any imperfection in the old floor will quickly show through the new one. When remodeling kitchen floors the old one is going to have to come up. The alternative is to lay a new sub-floor over the old floor which can have the same effect as having removed the old one, but can also cause weak spots as the wood flooring eventually conforms to the imperfections in the old floor.

To make the job quicker, remove everything from the kitchen that isn’t bolted down and possible some things that are. Some ovens are secured to the floor to prevent tipping when the oven door is open. When remodeling kitchen floors having everything out of the room will speed up the job as the need to move things several times while working around them is eliminated.

There are machines available for ripping up old vinyl flooring, but even when done there will be spots that will need work by hand. The floor is going to have to be nearly perfectly smooth before the floor is in place when remodeling kitchen floors. Once all the glue spots and small areas of leftover vinyl are gone, lay in the new sub-floor. Use care in making the cuts in the wood around cabinets and walls to insure they create a snug fit, yet allow space for expansion in humid climates.

With the sub-floor in place, it needs to be swept and damp mopped to remove any dust and debris that may interfere with the adhesive. Whether using adhesive tiles or glue, any foreign materials on the floor may prevent proper sealing. When using glue while remodeling kitchen floors, it needs to be spread evenly across the section of floor being worked on. Making sure it is even prevents peaks and valleys, which will be reflected in the floor’s surface when done.

Give the new surface time to settle before moving any of the kitchen appliances back. You don't want the extra weight to move the flooring or warp it before it is set. Although it is often the last thing you think about changing, the kitchen floors can make a real difference to the look of your kitchen and the effort required is well worth it. Apart from the look that the new flooring can give the kitchen you could also lay material that is easy to clean and maintain and is hard wearing. Provided the design is a classic or neutral look then the remodeling of the kitchen floor will last a long time.
