Private Alternative College Loans Are Typically Necessary In Addition To Government Funding

By: Donald Saunders

A lot of the Federal student loan schemes require no credit check and provide students with substantial financial help. However these programs are based upon need and generally carry additional criteria that might make it difficult to qualify. Even when students do qualify, the loans only cover a proportion of the total education bill in the majority of instances. If students are caught in this situation then they may turn to private alternative student loans to make up the difference.

Private alternative student loans too have their own difficulties. A credit check is almost universally required and this is not a problem as long as you have a good credit history. However 'good' is very much a relative term and if your credit history is not quite good enough then you will find that you are paying more than the standard interest rates.

Over and above the quoted interest rate there are other financial implications of private alternative loans. Fees will generally be added on to nominal loan amounts and a fairly small loan of $3,000 can easily have 4% in fees applied before distribution. This means $120 of the total will never be seen by the student but nonetheless has to be repaid. As a guide, 3% in fees is equal to 1% on top of the quoted interest rate.

But private alternative loans do carry certain advantages.

The first and maybe the most obvious one is that funds are available. Private lenders make a profit on the interest and fees that they charge and so have an interest in making money available to borrowers and they will try hard to see that each borrower qualifies. By contrast government lenders work under an inflexible set of criteria and there is generally no appeal if your application is denied.

Not having to deal with that cold and often unreasonable bureaucracy is another benefit of private loans. Alternative lenders have customer service departments that are there to answer queries so that customers can get the answers that they are looking for. Federal loan schemes often have help available too although the answers one gets are hit or miss when it comes to quality.

Other considerations that make private alternative loans especially desirable include:

The fact that neither parents nor students have to fill out FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid) forms and supply a mountain of additional documentation. Alternative loan applications are far simpler and the whole process is easier. However, fees and interest rates may be lower of higher depending on the specific program.

The best private loans will have zero fees and interest rates that are roughly equal to the prime rate. This is the rate that banks charge one another or charge their biggest and special customers. If you are able to get an interest rate at prime then this is a good deal and locating a rate at 1% below prime is a great deal.

To obtain this sort of loan it is generally necessary for you to have a great credit history or have a co-signer who has a very good credit history.

Finally, the best way to discover whether an alternative loan is going to meet your needs is to go out into the market and see exactly what is available.
