Jurong Bird Park - Check out Wonderful Species of Birds!

By: Peter Joseph

Issues regarding the safety and preservation of many species of birds have always been of concern. Most birds are either hunted as prey by larger animals or else they are killed by humans for food or captivated by them for the purpose of earning money by exhibiting them. This has led to the disappearance of many birds from the face of earth. This is indeed an inconsolable loss to both nature and also the humans who will never be able to sight them. Keeping in mind this ever growing menace, the Wildlife Reserves Singapore established the Jurong Bird Park which has now risen to the status of being one of the best bird parks in the country.

Situated on the western slope of the Jurong hill in Singapore, this bird park is spread over a total area of 20.2 hectares. It is the world’s largest bird park in terms of the number of bird species that it houses and second only to the Vogelpark Wolsrode in Germany in terms of area. The park is essentially a landscaped garden which was made keeping in mind the requirements of the various species. The Jurong Bird Park Singapore has over 8000 birds of around 600 species. This number also includes the one thousand and one flamingos and 29 birds which belong to the endangered species. The Jurong Bird Park Singapore was opened for the first time to the public on January 3, 1971 and it underwent its mammoth renovation 2006.

The Jurong Bird Park has a lot to offer to its visitors. It has unique experiences in store like the Birds n Buddies Show where birds of different species perform together for an audience, the Birds of Prey show where hunting birds that have specially trained are shown looming over and looking something to kill, the Flightless Birds where an entire area is designated to birds like ostriches, the Penguin Expedition where visitors can have a look at the birds flying underwater, the World of Darkness where the day night habits of nocturnal birds are altered so that visitors can see them and hear them, the Panorail which is the world’s only aviary monorail which can be used by the visitors for a memorable ride through the park, the Pelican Cove which house all the seven species of pelicans and the Lunch with the Birds where the visitors can enjoy a sumptuous grub beside the flamingo lake and also observe the beautiful birds.

The Jurong Bird Park gives its visitors a host of exciting offers. From the possibility of booking tickets online to a gift shop to memberships to adopting birds; the park does everything to arouse the interest of all. It also has other offers special educational and enrichment tours for schools so that all can get the chance to visit this piece of sheer dedicated art.

Therefore, the Jurong Bird Park is both entertaining and enlightening. It is the beacon of a movement beneficial to the human race.
