Flying Radio Controlled Choppers - A Pastime That Requires The Mastery Of A Genuine Chopper Pilot

By: Paul Mancini

Miniature Radio controlled choppers are an important hobby for many people. These miniature helicopters have most of the functionality of a regular sized helicopter and provide a lot of excitement to bystanders as their pilots take their mini choppers into the air and perform many tricks.

There are many types of Miniature Radio controlled choppers but the most common models are the Exceed G2 (Version 2) and OS 91 for F3C Competition. The Exceed features a 400 Class electric 6-Channel RTF chopper. It takes minutes to set up and has an FM radio system. It has an advanced pitch controller to let you fly any direction - even inverted. The OS 91 has 91HZ Heli Engine and is purpose built for competition. This is a powerful chopper with enhanced stability.

There are two ways to get into Mini RC helicopters. You can purchase the entire unit from your local shop (these are known as 'RTF' or 'ready to fly' models) or buy the components and assemble one for yourself. If you are assembling the complete model yourself, you will have to familiarize yourself with how the helicopter goes together. In this regard, they are no different from a full sized helicopter. The manual that comes with the parts should provide much of this information but you should also have a complete understanding of the mechanics. If you choose to set up your own helicopter, make certain that all of the parts are correctly fitted before you take off.

Learning to fly an RC chopper is relatively easy. With several hours of practice, you will be off to a good morning of flying. The two most critical maneuvers are lift off and stabilization. Once you have mastered both of these things, everything else should come easy. Again, these are the maneuvers you will be doing most. If you'd like to get a little flying experience without risking damage to your own chopper, you can use a simulator to the basics. A computer simulator will also show you how to accomplish all the maneuvers that the particular model of helicopter will allow you to accomplish. Again, with simulation software there is no risk.

You should know that the skills for flying Miniature RC helicopters and maintaining them in the air are the same as those required by a full sized helicopter pilot would so there are some precautions to take when flying them. The helicopter blades of the machine spin at up to 1600 rpm, meaning they have the potential to cut a toe or other part of the body. They can also shred clothing that comes in its way. You'll have to gain proficiency with your model before you carry out your first flight in front of bystanders, otherwise you may cause harm to them.

Also, remember that Radio control helicopters use FM radios. In some jurisdictions you'll have to notify the FCC about your intended use, although today this is rare.

Always keep the Miniature Radio controlled chopper away from you. Maintain about 30 yards distance when flying your helicopter. You will find this measure practical in the event that the chopper becomes uncontrollable and crashes onto the ground.

As a beginner there are many Miniature Remote control chopper clubs that you can participate in. Here you will meet gurus who can offer you tips on how to fly.
