The attention spans of the children of today are ever-shortening due to their over-exposure to various forms of media influence. Because of this it's becoming harder and harder for parents and educators to nurture a love for reading and learning in their kids/students. Let's face it, if your children don't like to read, you're not going to help them change that when they have the option of watching television or playing video games instead. In this day in age, because kids' brains are so saturated with media, one way to get them to form a love of learning is by incorporating multimedia elements into your social studies lesson plans. Structure options for US history lesson plans and world history lesson plans are much different these days than in decades past. We have so much technology available to us, that incorporating an array of activities using different types of media is a common occurrence in the modern classroom. Furthermore, even the younger students are computer-savvy, so there's not much of a learning curve when it comes to the technical aspects of multimedia learning. Are you doing everything you can to reach your students and make sure they retain information? No matter what you're teaching, your job is to ensure that your visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners are all get something out of your class. Let's say that August is approaching and you're working on your US history lesson plans. Obviously, you can't please everyone at once, but you can make sure that you plan multiple activities per class period so kids don't get bored, and more importantly, so all learning styles are addressed. Knowing that you have some students who learn visually and some students who learn more during hands-on activities, means you can tie each of these styles into your daily curriculum. How do you go about incorporating multimedia aspects into your social studies lesson plans? Well, you might start with something like a PowerPoint presentation, whether you create it yourself slide by slide or you purchase ready made presentation packages online that cover various subject areas. If you do decide to purchase PowerPoints online, look for a company that offers packets with worksheets, quizzes and other activities to go with the slides. In a PowerPoint presentation, you start with your text, which is broken up into short lines or paragraphs, but you can also add images, maps, artwork, charts, sound clips and video clips along with the verbiage. Students tend to enjoy watching video in class, but even that is broken up with time where they can take notes and participate in discussion. If you want engaging world history lesson plans, you'll need to be engaged yourself. After all, when teachers are enthusiastic about the subjects they teach, the students will catch on to that enthusiasm, which helps them develop a genuine interest in the subject. And that interest is what will help them retain the knowledge for a long time to come.
