CDL Schools - Important Selection Tips!

By: Nat Bronson

CDL schools have been very popular these days due to increased demand for drivers. As a result, commercial driver's license (CDL) has become a federal requirement for truck drivers who drive vehicles more than 26,000 lbs or which carry hazardous materials. This was enacted through the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 precisely to ensure safe driving of these "big rigs." CDL schools are thus primarily truck driving schools geared toward preparing students to pass the CDL permit test that will enable them to take advantage of the favorable employment opportunities open to licensed truck drivers in the US.

Currently, a truck driver can earn $35,000 annually based on a survey conducted by the American Truckers Association. Trucks represent the backbone of the distribution industry of goods, and the demand for competent truck drivers are projected to increase in the next few years. An estimated 8 million truck drivers have benefited from CDL schools today.

There are some standards and regulations for training programmes for all CDL schools. Hence, the CDL schools are expected to follow them and design their training package accordingly including any variations as desired by their federal and state government. These schools can be private, college based or company sponsored ones.

Whatever type of CDL schools being offered in the vicinity, a good source of information and guidance in selecting a good school is the local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office which will typically have a list of approved CDL schools. A good rule of thumb even without the help of the DMV are to look for CDL schools which programs certified by the Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI).

Some aspects when choosing the right driving school for you must be taken into consideration. For first you must be aware about what can a CDL school provide you in terms of orientation, fees, refundable fees, etc. As there is a very large demand of truck drivers all around there are some experienced drivers that compete for the best job so, when you choose one of the driving schools it's more reliable to be enrolled in a school that has connections to a big truck driving company. These can provide jobs for the new-entry graduates and also can provide a bigger attention to a becoming truck driver.

Trusted CDL schools provide besides the necessary of training and theoretical knowledge that can help anyone pass the CDL tests, also knowledge about rules, manners in driving, safety procedures, maintenance skills. The programs are designed for the student to be placed in similar conditions to those that can be met on the roads; the instructors will be able to measure and improve your decisional aspects and reactions.

Good CDL schools will not only provide the minimum training and knowledge required to pass the CDL licensing tests but sufficient hands-on and theoretical know-how pertaining to rules of the road, good driving manners, defensive driving, safety precautions and procedures, basic maintenance skills and tricks to handling large vehicles. Responsible CDL school instructors will engage their students in real-life situations to prepare them for scenarios that may require quick reactions and decision-making.

CDL schools are much more than a way to get a CDL. Because professional drivers will spend a large part of their working life in a truck, it is in their best interest to select a training program that will ensure such a life is a prolonged life. Trucks, buses and tractor-trailers are much more difficult to drive than smaller vehicles, and parking is just one of them. Most truck drivers go on the long haul so it is important that they are sufficiently trained to cope with difficult and stressful situations without losing their nerve. While rules and regulations exist to promote safety on the road, ultimately it is the nut behind the wheel that determines this.
